What are age spots?
Age spots, also known as liver spots, are very common small, flat, brown patches that appear on the skin.
Generally, age spots appear on people with mature skin as a consequence of the passage of time. However, there is also a strong connection between age or liver spots and UV exposure so use of sunbeds or sunbathing can also be a factor in their development.
Because skin regeneration slows down over time, the skin becomes more fragile and therefore susceptable to the effect of UV rays so small brown patches can appear, particularly on the face and hands.
People are more likely to develop age spots if they run in the family, or if they have repeatedly been exposed to the sun, but really, anyone can develop them.
