What are spots?

Although spots can be a visible symptom of an infectious disease such as measles or chicken pox, really, when we generally refer to a spot as a generic term that covers a myriad of skin conditions.

These can include acne, milia, pimples, blackheads, whiteheads, ingrown hairs and boils, or pigment-related conditions such as age spots.

They can occur when the usually harmelss bacteria which is present on the skin’s surface causes infection in a blocked pore.

A pore is actually a hair follicle attached to a sebaceous gland which produces moisturising sebum – an oily subtance that stops the hair and skin from becomg too dry.

If the gland produces too much sebum which then mixes with dead skin cells it can block the hair follicle and cause a spot.

The kind of spot that develops depends on the depth of the blockage and the bacteria present.

Although they usually come and go by themselves, spots can be extremely irritating and the cause of distress so if it’s important to have them removed, IPL for acne, Celluma Professional LED Light therapy and Chemical Peel treatments can all be effective.
