What is pigmentation from age spots, liver spots, sun spots, sun damage, and melasma?

Melanin is the pigment in skin which provides sun protection and colour to the skin. Melanocytes are the cells that produce melanin and while people usually have the same number of melanocytes, the amoint of melanin made by individuals varies. Generally, if your cells make more melanin then you skin will be darker, and this largely depends on your genetics.

Although melanin protects skin by absorbing light from harmful UV rays, this protection varies depending on the amount of melanin we produce which is why additional sun protection is necessary when we’re outside.

Hypopigmentation can occur when the skin makes an excess of melanin and patches of skin can become darker than the skin surrounding it. There are 3 common types:

  • age or liver spots usually occur on the face and hands as part of the aging process or as a result of sun exposure.
  • melasma or chloasma are patches of darkened skin which tend to appear on the stomach or face during pregnancy.
  • post inflammatory hyperpigmentation can develop as a result of acne or other inflammatory skin conditions.

Depending on the causes of hypopigmentation, IPL skin pigmentation treatments, Celluma LED light therapy, Cryopen Cryotherapy, Dermapen, and Chemical Peels can all be effective treatments.
