What are warts?
Warts are commonly occuring small lumps that appear on the skin that many people develop at some point. Although they are harmless and usually go by themselves, they can be irritating and stubborn so people often choose targeted treatment to get rid of them.
They are caused by strains of the human papilloma virus or HPV which cause extra cell growth that results in the areas of thicker harder skin we call warts.
Common warts usually occur on the hands and feel like rough bumps – a bit like a cauliflower. They can range in size from less than 1mm to around 10mm.
Plantar warts usually occur on the feet, particularly the soles and can become quite uncomfortable or even painful when they are are walked on.
Mosaic warts are very small, white, flatter warts that can grow under the toes or balls of the feet and rarely cause discomfort.
Flat warts tend to form in clusters from aroound 20 to 100. They are smaller and smoother than other types of wart and can develop anywhere on the body.
Filiform warts (also known as facial warts) often develop around the eyes or lips and appear as thin projections of skin around 1-2 mm long. they are not painful in themsleves but can cause discomfort if they devlop in awkward or sensitive areas.
