What are ingrown hairs?

In grown hairs occur when a hair has grown back into the skin.

People who have curly or coarse hair are more likely to develop ingrown hairs as a result of shaving, threading or plucking.

The hairs can look like itchy, raised bumps under the skin and sometimes the trapped, ingrown hairs are visible underneath the surface. The hair can also grow in the shape of a loop as the hair’s tip curves over and grows back into the skin.

if a a hair penetrates the skin, it reacts as it would to any slight wound causing inflammation, irritation, and itching. If an infection occurs due to the entry of bacteria, the bumps may contain pus and become quite sore and painful.

Although ususally entirely harmless, ingrown hairs can be irritating and painful. IPL laser treatment can be very effective, leaving skin feeling smooth, soft, and free from painful in-growing hairs.
